The Janusz Korczak Specialist Hospital in Slupsk hosted a two-day workshop for oncological surgeons on breast surgery.

The workshop was in the nature of a scientific meeting during which the best specialists from 15 centres in Poland shared their knowledge and experience on the most difficult cases of breast reconstruction.

Each of the participants presented a difficult clinical case to be discussed on the forum and operated on specific patients on the operating table.

Four patients underwent surgeries.

The first patient was a female breast amputee with damaged skin after chemo and radiotherapy. In this case, a postponed reconstruction with a skin flap and an implant was performed.

The second patient was a woman who had her breast removed due to cancer and then reconstructed with an expander. During the workshop, the expander was replaced with an implant and at the same time the other breast was symmetrised to achieve a satisfactory result for the patient.

The third patient was a young woman with a BRCA1 gene mutation and saggy breasts.

Due to the genetic mutation and high risk of cancer, both breasts had to be removed. Due to the difficult anatomical structure of the breasts, skin reduction and nipple lift were performed.

The last patient was a woman diagnosed with Poland syndrome, which is a genetic lack of ribs and breast gland. The patient had previously had two implants inserted, but due to a rupture of one of them, located deep in the chest wall, the damaged implant was replaced.

It was a really successful workshop with all the procedures performed.

All participants were actively involved in the substantive discussions and returned to their centres with new knowledge and experience.
